Strawberry Sushi: Stand-up Flowers

I know, I know. I am a little bit late on this one. But I can't believe that something so beautiful and, what is even more important, practical, was displayed on the Tokyo Design Week back in 2007, and still not seen anywhere in the stores. Disclaimer - not seen in any of the online stores I visit frequently, which is of course a lot of stores, but not all of them, so it might be selling somewhere after all. What is wrong with my sentences today?

So, what's the big deal, you ask? Well, here is the thing: Japanese design company Rock Paper Scissors has designed a product that acts as both packaging and a display system for fresh flowers. This is a dream come true for any florist, romantic and simply anyone who prefers single flowers to bouquets. Yet - not seen anywhere in the stores. Why oh why?

Called Tu-Tu RTD (Ready to Display), the product consists of a short vase that holds a single stem, inside a plastic tube that protects the flower in the shop and on the way home. The vase is made of recycled paper and the tube is made of recycled PET plastic.

Strawberry Sushi is a series of posts dedicated to the wonderful designs from the far away lands of Japan. I like to view these series as designs united under the motto: "If I lived in Japan, I would buy one in each color".  Strawberry Sushi comes out every Saturday.
